They sell those old fashioned clothes pins at the Dollar Store (Dollar Tree? General? one of those!). I think they work really well, and they look very cool too!
I store my ribbons by colour in clear pencil cases (the soft plastic kind with zips along the top). These cost me the equivalent of 50 cents each, and they're great, cos I can see immediately which colour I want. I store all the cases in two large IKEA boxes, with colours in one box, and neutrals, string, metallics, etc in the other. Sometimes I break up packs of matching ribbons, but sometimes I keep them separate - can't think of the criteria I use for this anomaly ;-D.
I've never heard of that one Virginia is talking about. I can take some off your hands...that will help! That orange gingham and the red teeny ball trim are some of my favorites!
I keep my ribbon in those photo boxes you can get at Hobby Lobby (the ones that are kinda like a shoe box.) But I don't know that this is the best.. lol.. so let us know what you come up with!

I bought Rubbermaid quart clear plastic round cannisters with white plastic screw-on tops at Walmart. They didn't cost much, and they work great. Since they are clear you can see all of the ribbons inside. I took my ribbons off their spools or cardboards and organized them into six cannisters: one for ribbons that are red, pink, or mostly these colors; one for blue, purple, and violet; one for greens; one for browns, neutrals; one for blacks and whites and combinations of these; and one for oranges and melons. They fit into a deep drawer in my work cabinet, but they would also look good sitting on your desk or on a shelf. I had looked at or tried other solutions (zip bags, spools on a dowel, pull ribbon bags, etc.), but this one wins hands down!
Mine are in a drawer that looks a lot like yours so I am either no help or helpful becuase you can sit back at the fact that there are people like me who do find this "organized" LOL
I suppose I could leave you a REAL tip. ;) I store all of mine by color, in a baggie, and then clip the baggie to a curtain rod I have suspended by little L-brackets on my wall. Does that make any sense at all? I'm planning on taking pics soon and I'll link you when I do!
I wrap each ribbon around a clothespin, stick it with a straight pin and then have them separated by types in clear containers (solids, sripes, polka dots, etc.). The "separating them out" might be a bit too OCD but the clothespin part works great. =)

One that I've heard is that if you have any really cool ribbon, or anything that's vintagey, to just give it to your friend Virginia.

ya know, I've had that problem for years. I may try that ribbon purse! (I think I may just have too much crap...kinda like my baker's twine!)
